Elections for Hockey India were due to be held on October 1, but were called off as no one stood for any of the vacancies. This allowed incumbents to be chosen unopposed in accordance with the constitution of the federation.

Rakesh Katyal, the president of Hockey Uttar Pradesh, and Bhola Nath Singh, the president of Hockey Jharkhand, withdrew their candidacies on Friday, which finally paved the way for Tirkey’s appointment.

Who is Dilip Tirkey?

Dilip Tirkey is a well-known field hockey player. He made headlines because he was recently elected as the new chairman of Hockey India.

On November 25, 1977, he was born in Sundergarh, Odisha, India and is a Christian by religion. His father’s name is Vincent Tirkey, a former hockey player from Odia, and his mother’s name is Regina Tirkey. He also has two younger twin brothers whose names are Anoop Tirkey and Ajit Tirkey. They also play hockey, but for Indian Railways.

His family practices Roman Catholicism. He was married to Mamta Tirkey. In 1996, he obtained the post of assistant manager at Air India (Bhubaneswar). He is also politically affiliated with the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

Currently, he is 44 years old.

His career

Dilip Tirkey played his first match against England in 1995. He has a total of 412 international caps and represented India at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004.

He was one of the toughest defenders to beat in the world due to his tight marking ability around the goal post. He is also well known for his penalty corners. He was previously the captain of the Indian hockey team.

He declared his retirement from the world stage on 2 May 2010. On 16 July 2010, three days after the Hockey Federation of India offered him the opportunity, he turned down the post of national coach.

He was one of three Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidates elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, on March 22, 2012, unopposed.

Former chairman of the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC), Dilip Tirkey is currently the head of the Odisha Hockey Promotion Council. He was chosen unopposed to be the chairman of Hockey India in September 2022.
