Program Functions
The Diabetes Program is funded under the federal grant, “Special Diabetes Program for Indians”. This program provides educational services to the community by identifying the onset of diabetes among the young and old. The gathering, planning, implementing, documenting, and reporting requirements are extremely important to this program so outcome measures can be performed. Services are provided to people that reside on the reservation and the Wendover, UT/NV Native Communities.
Services provided include cooking classes on how best to prepare a good proper meal and provide food samples with recipes. Consultation is made with Certified Nutrition Educators.
The program develops and encourages individuals to participate in walking events and exercise activities for the youth/families and overall encourage the diabetics to become involved with exercise activities.
The program also make home visits at least on a bi-weekly basis to help Diabetics maintain a healthy lifestyle and to make sure medical needs are met and. ensuring that patients are checking their blood sugar, blood pressure, and HBa1c tests. Monthly screenings are available to all non-diabetic individuals who are at-risk.

The program also provides yearly eye exams, foot exams, flu shots, smoking cessation classes for all diabetic patients.  Christine Steele is an enrolled member of the CTGR
